Why Do I Feel Anxious When Everything Seems Fine?
Sometimes anxiety makes sense. You’re facing something stressful, life feels uncertain, or there’s an obvious reason why you’re worried.
But what about when everything seems fine?
You might be getting on with your day when suddenly you notice a tight feeling in your chest, your thoughts start racing or you feel on edge. Then comes another worry:
“Why am I anxious? There’s nothing wrong.”
The truth is, anxiety doesn’t always arrive with an obvious explanation.
Your body can react to stress before you've consciously recognised it. You may have been coping with pressure for weeks or months, pushing feelings aside, looking after everybody else or simply carrying on because you have to.
Eventually, your mind and body may start telling you that something needs attention.
Anxiety can show up in different ways. You might notice overthinking, difficulty sleeping, irritability, feeling restless, struggling to relax or constantly expecting something to go wrong.
And sometimes the temptation is to fight it.
“I need to stop feeling like this.”
But becoming frightened or frustrated by anxiety can sometimes make it feel even bigger.
Instead, it can help to become curious about what you're experiencing.
What has been happening recently?
Have you been under more pressure than usual?
Are you giving yourself any time to slow down?
Is there something you've been trying not to think or feel?
You don't need to immediately find an answer.
Counselling can give you a space to explore what may be sitting underneath the anxiety and begin understanding your own patterns, without pressure to have everything figured out.
I offer counselling for adults in Whitstable and across Kent, as well as online counselling throughout the UK.
