Trauma Counselling in Whitstable & Online

Sometimes what happened in the past doesn't stay in the past.

Difficult or traumatic experiences can continue to affect how you feel, think and respond long after the experience itself has ended.

You might find yourself feeling constantly on edge, shutting down emotionally, struggling to trust people, avoiding certain situations or reacting strongly without always understanding why.

Trauma counselling offers a supportive space to begin making sense of what you've experienced and how it may still be affecting you today.

I offer trauma-informed counselling face-to-face in Whitstable and online, working gently and at a pace that feels manageable for you.

How Trauma Can Show Up

Trauma doesn't always look the way people expect it to. Sometimes you may not connect how you're feeling now with things you've experienced in the past.

You might notice:

  • Feeling constantly alert or on edge

  • Finding it difficult to trust other people

  • Avoiding situations, places or conversations that feel uncomfortable

  • Feeling emotionally numb or disconnected

  • Becoming overwhelmed by certain situations or triggers

  • Struggling with anger, fear, guilt or shame

  • Being very hard on yourself

  • People-pleasing or finding it difficult to say no

  • Feeling unsafe even when you know you're not in danger

  • Difficulties within relationships

  • Memories or experiences coming back when you don't want them to

Sometimes these responses can feel confusing, particularly when the difficult experience happened a long time ago.

Understanding why your mind and body respond in these ways can be an important part of beginning to move forward.

How Counselling Can Help with Trauma

Trauma counselling isn't about making you relive everything that happened or pushing you to talk about experiences before you feel ready.

We can begin by understanding how your experiences may be affecting you now — your emotions, relationships, thoughts, behaviours and the way your body responds when something feels threatening.

Together, we can explore triggers and patterns, develop ways to manage overwhelming feelings and gradually help you feel safer and more in control.

You decide what you want to talk about and when. We work at a pace that feels manageable for you.

The aim isn't to erase what happened, but to help the past have less power over the way you live your life today.

What Happens in Trauma Counselling?

Your first session is about beginning to understand you and what has brought you to counselling. You don't need to tell me your whole story or go into painful details before you feel ready.

We can start with what is affecting you now and explore how past or difficult experiences may be connected to the way you're feeling, thinking or responding today.

Safety and trust are important when working with trauma, so we take things gradually. You remain in control of what you choose to talk about.

There is no expectation that you should be able to “just move on”. We work together to help you understand your responses, develop ways of coping and begin moving forward at your own pace.
