How do I know If I need Counselling?

Wondering whether counselling is right for you? Discover some of the signs that talking to a counsellor could help and why you don’t have to wait until you are in crisis to ask for support

Many people wonder whether their problems are “serious enough” for counselling. The truth is, you don’t have to be in crisis to benefit from talking to someone. Counselling isn’t only for major life events—it can also help when life simply feels harder than usual.

You don’t have to reach breaking point

A common misconception is that you should only seek counselling when everything has fallen apart. In reality, many people come to therapy because they want support before things become overwhelming.

You may notice that you’re feeling more anxious, emotionally drained, irritable or stuck. Sometimes you can’t quite explain what’s wrong—you just know you don’t feel like yourself.

Signs counselling may help

You might benefit from counselling if you are:

  • Feeling anxious or overwhelmed most days.

  • Struggling with low mood or motivation.

  • Finding it difficult to cope with stress.

  • Going through a relationship breakdown.

  • Living with grief or loss.

  • Feeling lonely or isolated.

  • Constantly worrying.

  • Finding past experiences are affecting your present.

  • Wanting to understand yourself better.

You don’t need to tick every box. If something is affecting your wellbeing, it’s worth talking about.

It’s okay if you don’t know where to start

Many clients tell me they worry they won’t know what to say.

That’s completely normal.

You don’t need to arrive with everything organised or have all the answers. We’ll begin wherever feels comfortable for you, and we’ll work together at a pace that feels right.

Asking for help is a strength

Reaching out for support isn’t a sign of weakness—it’s a sign that you’re looking after yourself.

Taking the first step can feel daunting, but many people say they wish they’d done it sooner.

A Thought to Leave You With

You don’t have to wait until life feels unbearable before asking for support.

Sometimes the bravest thing we can do is simply acknowledge that we’re finding things difficult.

Whatever you’re carrying, you don’t have to carry it alone.

One conversation won’t solve everything, but it can be the beginning of something different.
