Face-to-Face or Online Counselling: Which Is Right for You?

Choosing to start counselling is one decision. Choosing how you want to have your sessions is another.

Some people feel more comfortable sitting in a counselling room with someone. Others prefer being at home, where things feel more familiar. Neither option is better — it’s about what feels right for you.

Face-to-face counselling

Face-to-face counselling can suit people who like having a separate space away from everyday life.

Coming to a counselling room can help create a clear boundary between your session and everything else going on around you.

It may also feel easier to connect in person, especially if you value being able to sit with someone in the same room.

Online counselling

Online counselling can be a good option if travelling is difficult, your schedule is busy, or you simply feel more comfortable talking from home.

For some people, being in their own space makes it easier to open up.

Online sessions can also offer more flexibility if you live outside Whitstable or elsewhere in the UK.

Does online counselling feel different?

It can feel slightly different at first, particularly if you haven’t used video calls much before.

But the purpose of the session is still the same.

You have time to talk, explore what is happening for you and work through things at your own pace.

What if I’m not sure which to choose?

You don’t have to get it perfectly right from the beginning.

You may start online and later decide you would prefer face-to-face sessions, or the other way around.

The important thing is choosing something that makes accessing support feel easier rather than harder.

Think about what feels safest and most comfortable

You might want to consider:

  • where you feel most able to talk openly

  • whether you have somewhere private at home

  • how easy it is for you to travel

  • your work or family commitments

  • whether you prefer speaking to someone in person or through a screen

There is no correct answer.
